Illustrative Type Book Cover

student assignment, 2019

This assignment entailed choosing an existing novel and recreating a cover for it that would use illustrative type. I chose The Return of the King by J. R. R. Tolkien and decided to use imagery from one of final scenes in the story. I attempted to manipulate the cracks and edges in Mount Doom to spell the name of the book.

Process

This is the original sketch I used as the composition for the cover. The sketch is in graphite and I wanted to keep the sketchy style and tonal change so I created the final image in Photoshop.
